About Carmel School

A revival of Jewish consciousness became apparent all over the world in the 1950's following the destruction of the Central European Jewish communities during World War II. This revival was reflected in Perth with the establishment in February 1957 of the Seeligson Kindergarten, with 17 pupils.

The success of this undertaking was a turning point for Jewish education in Perth: in November 1958 a meeting of parents resolved to start a day school.

Carmel School opened with 11 pupils, mainly graduates from the Seeligson Kindergarten. The Kindergarten and School functioned in premises known as Monash Hall and Perth Hebrew School, adjoining the Shule in Brisbane Street. In 1962, through the generosity of Mr G Korsunski (whose name the school still bears), the Seeligson Trust, and a major community appeal, and by arrangement with the Maccabean Grounds, a new building was constructed for the School. In 1975, with a grant of $90,000 from the Commonwealth Government, a major donation from Mr J N Shohet and other generous donations, the J N Shohet High School was constructed.

The JJ & N Krasnostein Senior High School opened three years later in February 1978 following another generous endowment, and this allowed the school to cater for all levels from kindergarten to tertiary education. In 1984 the School Hall was completed, thanks to the generosity of the Breckler and Troy families.

In 1989, as part of the School's 'Planning for the Future' initiative, expansion continued and the Kindergarten classes moved into an attractive new purpose-built facility. This was followed by the construction of new Primary School buildings, including the Sylvia and Harry Hoffman Hall, and in 1991 the Primary classes from Prep to Year 7 moved into these new premises in Woodrow Avenue. The new administration and High School staff facilities building was completed in mid-1991.

In 1993 the School's Planning Committee and architect developed a master plan for a three stage High School redevelopment and refurbishment project, which was completed in 1997. During this period the David, Gita & Michael Hoffman Science & Techno
