Carmel School Golden Jubilee 1959-2009
Welcome to our 50th birthday celebrations!
Prior to Carmel School commencing in 1959 there was a great deal of community debate over the establishment of a Jewish Day School in Perth. Mr Joe Berinson summarized the views of the community into 3 groups; “those that considered the project desirable but impractical; those that firmly declaim that it is neither practical nor desirable and finally in that small band among which I count myself, is that belief that the idea of a day school is desirable and NOT impossible…..”
That “small band” continued to challenge the community and had the drive and vision to ensure a Jewish Day School in Perth became a reality. 50 years on, Carmel School has become a central focus for the Perth Jewish Community. From 11 children enrolled in 1959, Carmel School now caters for over 550 children from Kindergarten – Year 12 in an environment that allows them to integrate their faith in the broader context of a secular education.
Our Golden Jubilee celebrations give us an opportunity to recognise the contribution of many and importantly challenge us to contribute to the future of Carmel School. I look forward immensely to celebrating this milestone with families past and present at the many exciting events throughout the year.
