As an additional tool to assist Year 10 students with their subject selection, and as further demonstration of its commitment to offering comprehensive and valuable guidance to students as they progress, Carmel has become one of only a handful of Schools in Western Australia to utilise the innovative Morrisby Online system

Students put in 100 minutes of concentration to the online career decision-making system, completing a series of timed aptitude tests and untimed questionnaires, to provide information on their intellectual strengths, personal style and career preferences. This information is blended and used to generate an initial list of careers, subject suggestions and areas of study which The Morrisby Organisation believe would suit them.

The system is interactive, giving students the power to adjust the weightings of the various elements and thereby changing the suggestions. They can also re-complete aspects of the system to ensure the results remain an up-to-date representation of them over the years of senior school and beyond.

The completed Morrisby reports are then sent home to the student and their families. Following this, they can if they wish, arrange to have further discussions with four of the Carmel teaching staff who have trained as a Morrisby qualified career practioner, demonstrating further the Schools investment in not only its students, but also its staff.

The objective behind the systems interactive approach is to move away from a static list of career suggestions. Students are encouraged to use the functionality, customise their results and explore the resulting suggestions using the wide range of career information links provided. Using the system in this way will hopefully lead to students seeing career decision making as an evolving process, and hopefully generate self awareness and reflection.

Commenting on the adoption of the system, Principal Shula Lazar said: “We are delighted to be utilising Morrisby Online here at Carmel School, and hope that it adds to the suite of tools we already offer our students when it comes to informing their decisions about the future. Carmel School is passionate about its students and anything we can provide alongside our highly trained staff, as they look towards their later academic and professional life, is invaluable.”

Year 10 student, Toni Grolman added: “The process definitely reaffirmed the ideas that I had about my future in terms of the career path I am looking to take going forward. Whilst some suggestions it presented were a bit removed from where I ultimately see myself, nonetheless they did give me valuable food for thought.”

Samuel Kerbel, a fellow student said: “I found that the method used is particularly insightful in terms of the questions it poses, and the assumptions it makes, the system really understood me and my character and personality traits so all in all an invaluable exercise.”
