On Sunday 7 April, Carmel School celebrated its friends and supporters by hosting a special performance of the musical, The Wizard of Oz. Guests were invited to a cocktail function prior to the musical and the formal proceedings of the evening included an acknowledgment of Mr. John Schaffer, a long-standing supporter of the school who was bestowed with life membership.

In speaking of John’s commitment to the school, Danny Breckler reflected on his leadership qualities, “John is always asking, ‘How can I inspire others and encourage others to find a better outcome and are we the best we can be?”, he said. Danny also acknowledged the incredible commitment John and Debbie have made to the school through the Ashley Schaffer Early Learning Centre. The building of the Ashley Schaffer Early Learning Centre was a commitment John and Debbie made in memory of the tragic loss of their son Ashley, who would have been 40 years old this year. “John, Debbie and your family should be proud that the memory of Ashley lives on every day as hundreds of our children and grandchildren experience an introduction to their Jewish heritage through the Ashley Schaffer Early Learning Centre,” Danny said.

In his speech, Danny also reflected on the value of the school and how that value is defined by John. “John fully understands the fundamental proposition that Camel School plays a vital role in connecting students with their faith and the ongoing continuity and strengthening of our Jewish community. John calls it Jewish Pride,” said Danny.

The evening was a fitting acknowledgment of the incredible service John has given to the school over so many years, as a Board member, a donor and Chairman of the Korsunski Charitable Trust.
