On Thursday 2 July, our Economics and Politics students welcomed Senator the Honourable Mathias Cormann to Carmel High School to share his insight into both fields and to tour the campus. As an elected WA Senator since 2007, the Minister for Finance since 2013, Leader of the Government in the Senate since 2017 and Special Minister of State, there might not be another person in the country who can offer such a unique combination of economic and political experience. Senator Cormann has served during three leaderships, spanning the Abbott, Turnbull and Morrison Governments.

For their upcoming ATAR exams, our students analyse important issues like parliamentary accountability, monetary and fiscal policy and the impact of COVID-19, as well as the role of Government Ministers and Senators in all of these. We thank Senator Cormann for being so generous with his time and for sharing his knowledge with our students, who taxed him with some very well-thought-out questions!
