Introducing Thomas Zahra
We warmly welcome Thomas Zahra to Carmel School this year as the new Primary School Physical Education Teacher.
With a history of teaching in rural schools across Western Australia, Thomas is already feeling right at home at Carmel School.
“Being a smaller school creates a country school-like community that I grew to love from teaching in places such as Ravensthorpe, Kununurra and Port Hedland with my wife who is also a primary school teacher.”
“What I am enjoying most so far is the positive relationship I have formed with the students,” he said.
Completing a four-year Bachelor of Education at Curtin University, Thomas chose his career path because of the vast number of benefits Physical Education provides to students.
“Physical Education can be used to improve a lot more than physical ability, such as mental wellbeing, emotional regulation, healthy lifestyles, resilience, sportspersonship, determination, goal setting, teamwork and respect,” he said.
Thomas finds organising sporting carnivals to be the most rewarding part of his work as he loves to see students succeed even when they had doubts before the event.
“I hope to make Physical Education in the Primary School even more inclusive than it already is and through the use of PE, build strength and confidence in our students,” Thomas said.
